I first watched this film when I was quite young so didn't completely understand it but fell in love with it's magical qualities regardless. I re-watched it recently for the first time in years and remembered what it was that had captivated me.
Amélie's father mistakenly believes that his daughter has a heart defect and consequently decides that she is not fit to attend a public school; Amélie is home schooled, has little contact with other people and so retreats into her own magical dream world.
The film effectively directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, looks beautiful, perfectly capturing the romantic whimsy of Amélie's personality and made me want to live in Paris, even though I didn't particularly see what all the fuss was about the city when I visited last year.
It's a light-hearted film about one girl's quest for love and other people's happiness and will definitely make you smile. And the soundtrack is amazing!
