I don't think I've ever seen a film quite like Submarine.
It's amazingly shot and so clever. And whilst it may seem lighthearted and is actually really funny at times, it deals with some seriously dark issues such as depression, cancer and the break up of a marriage. But even so, Ayoade somehow manages to make the whole experience an enjoyable one, transporting the viewer directly into the unusual mind of Oliver Tate and keeping us there soaring high above the more touchy subjects which would otherwise have made the film a pretty bleak watch.
Ayoade's affinity to the surreal is definitely evident here, and the end product is quirky (I hate using that word but there's really no other way to describe it) and heartwarming. There are some lovely bits of graphic design throughout the film too, and the end credits whilst surprisingly simple fit with the rest of the film so well. The poster is great too, and there are lots of little nods towards the film in it (e.g. the title split into groups of 3, the blue line acting as water...)

And regardless of how retarded his character is, Noah Taylor is adorable.
